Contemplating the time The culture of the two past war periods, the 30s and the 50s, is the esthetic of filmed myths, full of secret and refined eroticism body and soul wantonness and open expression of emotions. Time in art is reversible. Lucia Popenko is able to fill an old document with life and flesh and to relate it to the future and the past. She has another artistic device: she imposes several space backgrounds one upon another so that the figures placed start to function in several layers. Words written on some transparent surface go all over the canvas. What is it? The possibilities of trick photography? Probably this is an unconscious intuitive desire to express motion in space, not necessary physical motion, but changes in mood, emotions, soul. The themes born under the influence of ‘Belle Epoque’, ‘Art Nouveau’ - a dance, a kiss, mythical legendary, female characters – are the popular subjects of her art, but they are transformed by the modern time. Her art knows no contrasts, it is a tranquil sentimentalism of the time complimented and praised by her own imagination. Together with the things fixed and rooted in space, there is a world of sudden emotions, unstable, flexible, stretched out in time. | |
